Screening Soil for Lead -2016 Summer Youth

Henry Spliethoff from the New York State Department of Health visited the 2016 summer youth team to talk about the dangers of lead contamination in soil, and implications for urban gardeners.  He also described how the X-Ray Florescence instrument measures the concentration of lead and other elements in different media – which was very interesting for youth who had taken chemistry this past school year!  The youth measured the lead concentrations in soil collected by a concerned resident of Ezra Prentice Homes, from different areas near the train tracks. Fortunately, all samples had low levels of lead.
