The Summer Youth Team learned about cultivating edible shiitake mushrooms on logs and then applied those skills first-hand. Mushrooms can be grown on urban waste products in shaded environments – to either earn money or remediate contaminated soils.
1. Drill holes in the logs
2. Inoculate the logs by putting spawn into the holes
Step 3: Cover the holes and the ends of the logs with hot beeswax, to prevent contamination
Don’t forget the recycled tin can labels!!!!
