Aquaponics is a method of raising fish while utilizing their waste products to grow vegetables. It is a highly scalable technology that can be implemented either in the home or commercially. This workshop will cover the theory, design, and construction of an aquaponic system. Discussion will include fish & plant species selection, water quality concerns, and system start-up. Participants will have the opportunity to examine first-hand theRadixCenter’s aquaponics system, which grows tilapia, catfish, koi, crawfish, watercress, lettuce, and flowering plants.

Sliding Scale $40-$75

Seedballs!

The spring rains are finally here, and present a great time to scatter seedballs.

Making seedballs is a fun activity for groups of kids and adults alike.

To make, mix together:

3 parts clay

2 parts aged compost

1 part seed

Shape into large grape size balls, and scatter!

The clay holds the ball together and the compost provides nutrition once the seed has sprouted.

Use wildflower seeds and scatter the seedballs throughout vacant city lots, creating habitat for butterflies and honeybees!

SUNY Albany Sustainability Group Visit

Members of the Student Sustainability Council and faculty and staff Sustainability Coordinators from the University at Albany arrived in one of UAlbany’s hybrid buses for a tour of the Radix Center in May 2012. The tour was organized by Mary Ellen Mallia, Director of the Office of Environmental Sustainability, which spearheads UAlbany’s efforts towards sustainability, including: hybrid vehicles, irrigation of lawns from a rainwater retention pond, a raingarden, energy efficiency rewards for students in the dormitories, recycling, & use of Green Seal approved cleaning products. They are also putting a solar array on one of their buildings.

RUST – The Regenerative Urban Sustainability Training - an intensive weekend workshop of skills for building ecologically resilient communities in today’s cities.

In this class, Scott Kellogg and other sustainability experts give attendees a “toolbox” of techniques and knowledge usable by anyone wanting to create sustainable systems in their own communities. Through a combination of group hands-on activities and lectures, participants will learn how to build infrastructure for self-reliance that is simple, affordable, and replicable. These systems can be applied in either urban or rural environments.

We are happy to announce:

Open House Tour

begins at 1pm sharp the last Sunday of each month.

Donations are appreciated.

Private & Group Tours of the Radix Center can be scheduled. Minimum suggested donation for a private 1/2 hour tour is $20.

Volunteer Hours:

Mondays & Wednesdays: 10:30-2

The last Sunday of every month: 1-4pm

If you would like to volunteer but are only available on weekends, contact us – it is likely there are other days we will be around and we can work out a good time.
